GRILL RUNS FOR 194 YARDS

INMAN – After trailing the entire first half on the road at county rival Inman, Moundridge shut down the Teutons in the final two quarters while scoring 22 to get a 22-14 playoff win and move on in the Class 1A state playoffs.

Now 8-2 for the season, the Wildcats will go on the road again Friday to Smith Center to play the unbeaten (10-0) Redman in a sectional battle. Smith Center has beaten Whitewater (64-0) and Hays/Thomas More Prep (24-14) in their first two games of the playoffs. Ironically if the Wildcats can defeat Smith Center, they could then face Sterling in their next playoff game as Sterling is paired up to play Hutchinson Trinity Catholic on Friday. Sterling is the only other team to beat Moundridge this season.

After losing to Inman 7-22 just a couple of weeks earlier,  the Wildcats found themselves in a 0-14 deficit heading into the halftime break before putting 15 points on the board in the third quarter with a safety and a pair of short scoring runs, to take a 15-14 lead into the final quarter of play.

Paul Grill topped off a monster day of running with a game clinching 51-yard run for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to give Moundridge the final 22-14 victory.

Grill was the offense for Moundridge as he took the ball 21 times and ran for 194 yards to lead the Wildcat offense who ran up 275 yards on 52 plays but lost 74 yards on 11 penalties.

Gill also led the Moundridge defense with eight tackles.

Wildcat head coach Tyler O’Connor reflected on the game by saying, “Our leadership showed up on Friday with the second half comeback. Our defense sparked us with a safety, and our offense took it from there. Proud of our guys for showing up when it counted.”
