On Tuesday, the Smoky Valley girls took a step toward the state tournament by defeating Santa Fe Trail 54-32 in their first-round game.

As the sixth seed of sub-state, the Lady Vikings are now 15-6 for the season as they prepare to battle second seeded Hesston (18-3) on Friday in the semi-finals. The winner will then play the winner of a tangle between top seeded Halstead (18-3) and fourth seeded Osage City (17-4) for a shot at the sub-state championship on Saturday and a trip to the state tournament.

Smoky Valley held a three-point, 14-11, lead at the end of the first quarter before Santa Fe Trail pulled to within one, 22-22, at the halftime break.

Coming out of the intermission, it was all Lady Vikings as they poured 22 points on the scoreboard while holding Sant Fe Trail to just six, to take a commanding 17-point, 44-27 advantage into the final eight minutes of play where Smoky Valley doubled up the Santa Fe Trail scoring to gain the  final 22-point victory.

Adrian Hazelwood had a game high 26 points while both Tinley Scott and Katja Blanchat chipped in with eight.

The Lady Vikings dominated the paint, outscoring Santa Fe Trail 26-12 under the basket, and on the boards with a 35-23 advantage in rebounds. Breanne Peters led Smoky Valley by pulling down nine rebounds while Blanchat grabbed eight.
