Hazelwood sets Career Marks for Points, Rebounds

LINDSBORG – It was a grand week for the Smoky Valley girls’ basketball team and Adrian Hazelwood as the team won three straight games over Hoisington, Larned, and Haven while Hazelwood set a pair of career marks.

 

For Hazelwood, she set career marks on Thursday at Larned as she not only went over the 1,000-career point mark, but she also powered past the 500-career rebound level as well.

With the three wins, the Lady are now 12-5 for the season, while having won five straight games for the second time this season. After starting 2-4, they have now won 10 of 11 games.

 

Next up will be a pair of road games, at Pratt on Tuesday before heading to rival and sixth ranked in Class 3A, Hesston on Friday.

 

On Tuesday on the road at Hoisington, Smoky Valley scored a five-point, 54-49 win.

 

Being up 32-23 at halftime, the Lady Vikings held off Hoisington, who outscored them 22-26 in the final two quarters to get the final victory.

 

Adrian Hazelwood led the Lady Vikings in scoring with 23, rebounds by grabbing nine and assists as she passed out seven. Joining her in double digits scoring were Tinley Scott with 13 and Katja Blanchat who had 12. Smoky Valley dominated the paint by out rebounding Hoisington 34-26 and outscoring inside them in the paint 22-12.

 

Hazelwood and Blanchat each scored 20 points on Thursday as Smoky Valley rolled past Larned on the road, getting a 19-point, 59-40 victory.

 

Again, the Lady Vikings dominated the paint, outscoring  Larned 36-20 while also holding a 14-4 advantage on transition points. Both Hazelwood and Blanchat just missed double doubles as they both grabbed eight rebounds.

 

Closing out the week at home with Haven, the Lady Vikings overcame poor shooting to gain an eight-point, 39-31 win.

 

After being up by five at the end of the first quarter, Haven came back to tie Smoky Valley at 14-14 going into the halftime break. Coming out of the intermission, the Lady Vikings outscored the visitors 25-17 in the final 16 minutes of play to gain their fifth straight victory.

 

The Lady Vikings gained the win despite only shooting 24% from the inside the arc and allowed Haven to out rebound them 26-29.

 

Hazelwood again led the team in scoring with 19 while Tinley Scott chipped in with 10. Katja Blanchat dominated the paint by grabbing 11 rebounds.
