HAYS – It was not a pleasant road trip on Thursday for the McPherson Middle School Junior Lady Pup volleyball 8th-grade volleyball teams as they traveled to Hays and lost all four matches to Hays and Great Bend.

In the ‘A’ Teams match with Hays, they lost 10-25 in the first set but bounced back only to lose by three, 22-25, in the second set before losing straight sets again to Great Bend, this time both by the same score of 19-25.

“The Junior Lady Bullpups faced some steep competition today at Hays,” explained head coach Christine Pianalto. “We served very well but passed the ball inconsistently. The girls fought hard to earn a few rallies in each game, they just could not get past a strong serving and hitting group from both Hays and Great Bend.”

The pair of losses drops the 8th-grade Junior Lady Pups to 2-2 for the season.

For the Junior Lady Bullpup ‘B’ team, they also lost in straight sets to both Hays and Great Bend.

With the match against Hays, it was all Hays as they handed McPherson a 13-25, 12-25 straight set loss which was followed by a straight set loss, 18-25 and 14-25 to Great Bend.

Reflecting on the two losses, ‘B’ team coach Tami Malm noted, “We faced two strong teams today and while our serves were much better against Hays, when the ball came back over to our side, we did not communicate well. We communicated and passed better against Great Bend, but we just could not get over the hump. The girls showed some great hustle in our second match, but we were inconsistent all the way around.”

The ’B’ team is now 0-4 for the young season, still looking for that first win.

Next up will be a home dual with Haysville/Campus on Tuesday, September 5. The match will also be the annual ‘Can You Dig It’ initiative to collect canned foods for the McPherson County Food Bank. Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item with them to the game, those that do will receive a $1 discount on the gate ticket for the game.
