CANTON/GALVA SPIKERS SWEEP 2 AT HOME

HAMMER PEABODY/BURNS – OUT DUEL RURAL VISTA

By Staff

CANTON – The Canton/Galva volleyball team raised their early season record to 3-1 by hosting Rural Vista and Peabody/Burns on Tuesday and scoring wins in both matches.

Next up for the Lady Eagles will be on Saturday, September 9 when they play at the Goessl Tournament.

On Tuesday, the Lady Eagles opened up the evening with a straight set hammering of Peabody/Burns, winning 25-5 and 25-8.

“We were straight business at the beginning of the evening against Peabody/Burns,” noted Lady Eagle head coach Jessica Putman. “Everyone was on the same page to get the job done.”

Among the leaders of the Lady Eagle stat sheet for the straight set domination was Adi Alcala who dished out 11 of the teams 13 assists while Rae Hawkinson made five digs and four kills. Trinity Espinoza led the team in kills with seven while freshman Londyn Dietrich pounded out five service aces. Senior Emma Herrera also pounded out three service aces and both Espinoza and Adi Alcala had two each.

It was a bit more of a battle for Canton/Galva when they hit the court with Rural Vista as they scored a 25-18 hard fought win in set one before Rural Vista nipped the Lady Eagles by two, 23-25 in set two. The Lady Eagles bounced back and won the match with a 25-17 victory in set three.

Coach Putman concluded her reflections on the evening by saying, “Against Rural Vista in the first set, we still kept those vibes from the first match going. In the second set, we got flustered and then got stuck in a couple of rotations that we are going to have to work out during practice the rest of the week before our weekend tournament. I am proud of the way we pulled together in the third set and believed in one another again to finish with the overall win.”

Trinity Espinoza had a strong match against Rural Vista, leading the Lady Eagles in Digs with 11, Services Aces with four and Kills with 16.

Adi Alcala pounded out another 20 assists and Elyria transfer Rae Hawkinson continued to be an overall force to deal with as she made eight digs, knocked down three kills and served a pair of aces.
