LINDSBORG – A youthful Smoky Valley football team gave the home crowd everything they had but still came up short on the scoreboard Friday in losing to Haven 61-28.

With just four seniors surrounded by eight juniors, fourteen sophomores and eight freshmen, the Vikings are now 0-2 but playing hard as they now prep for a battle next Friday on the road at Larned. Larned is 1-1 so far in 2023 with a loss to Pratt and a win over Lyons.

For the Vikings, Gavin Stambaugh ran into the end zone from one yard out to give them their first score though they were still in the hole 12-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Ty Heitschmidt scored from 11 yards out in the second quarter, but Haven put 22 on the board and held a commanding 34-14 lead at halftime before pouring 27 points into the stat sheet in the third quarter raising their lead to 61-14.

In the final quarter of action, Stambaugh scored again on a short plunge into the end zone and Heitschmidt, the Vikings sophomore quarterback found sophomore tight end Kristian Ryan for a 15-yard scoring pass play to make the final verdict 61-28.

The Viking offense still struggled to get yards as they had 183 yards on 64 plays against Haven, with Stambaugh leading the offense with 64 yards rushing.

On defense, Smoky Valley had 15 players put a tackle by their name in the stat sheet with junior Ezekiel Baker getting six total tackles of which three were solo stops.
