HERINGTON – The Moundridge football team turned things around to perfection as they closed out the regular season on Friday with a huge 62-6 thumping of Herington on the road.

With the win, the Wildcats are 8-0 and district champions which also gives them homefield advantage in the first round of 8-Man Division I regionals on Friday when they will host Attica/Argonia (5-3). With a win they will then play the winner of a battle between Oswego (4-4) and Chase County (5-3).

On Friday, Moundridge jumped all over Herington in the first quarter by putting up 46 points that included a pair of scoring passes from Henry Hecox to Barrett Moddelmog and Kaizer Kanitz along with three scoring runs by Kreighton Kanitz and a pair by Hecox. Kreighton Kanitz also took an interception back for a score as well.

Kaizer Kanitz joined his brother in returning an interception for a score early in the second quarter while Fynn Burge caught a pass from Hecox and found paydirt. While Herington did get a 14-yard pass play for a touchdown, the damage was done and after a Kaizer Kanitz run for a score late in the half, the game ended at halftime due to the point rule for 8-Man football, at 62-6.

Moundridge dominated the stat sheet with 11 first downs to just six for Herington while picking up 268 yards in offense on 22 plays compared to just 85 on 30 plays for Herington. The Wildcat defense forced Herington into making six turnovers, three on fumbles and three on pass interceptions.

Individually, Hecox totaled 185 yards in offense with 103 passing and 82 running while Kreighton Kanitz ran for 74 yards on just four carries.

Hecox also led the Wildcat defense with eight tackles.
