MOUNDRIDGE – In their first round of regionals for a run at the 8-Man Division I State Championship, the Moundridge football found success on Thursday in a 66-20 win over visiting Attica/Argonia.
Now 8-0 on the season, the Wildcats will next battle Chase County on Friday, November 3 for the regional championship. Chase County comes in with a 6-3 record after getting a 52-30 win over Oswego on Thursday.
For the Wildcats, they went up 20-0 in the first quarter on a pair of Henry Hecox scoring runs covering 15 and 36 yards while Kreighton Kanitz scored on a 45 jaunt down the sidelines for a score.
Attica/Argonia traded scores with Moundridge in the second quarter as Henry Hecox threw a pair of scoring passes to Kaizer Kanitz around a pair of touchdown runs by Attica/Argonia, leaving Moundridge with a 34-14 advantage at the halftime break.
Coming out of the break, both Hecox and Kaizer Kanitz scored on short runs before Attica/Argonia put another score in the books, leaving the Wildcats with a commanding 50-20 lead after three quarters of play.
The Wildcats put the game out of reach of Attica/Argonia in the fourth quarter as Hecox connected with Barrett Moddelmog for a 46-yard scoring pass and Kaizer Kanitz scored for the fourth time in the game on a short six-yard dash to the end zone, giving the Wildcats their final 66-20 win.
On the stat sheet the game appeared to be much closer than the score as Moundridge had just one more first down, 16-15, and ran up 332 yards in offense to 268 for Attica/Argonia. Attica/Argonia nicked the Wildcat defense for 191 yards rushing while Moundridge had an even balance game with 171 passing and 161 running.
The big difference was on defense where the Wildcats forced Attica/Argonia to make three turnovers, a pair of interceptions by Kaizer Kanitz and a fumble. Ben DenHartog and Henry Hecox led the defensive effort for the Wildcats with 11 tackles each and Kaizer Kanitz made eight stops.
Hecox connected on six of his seven throws, good for 171 yards and three scores with Kaizer Kanitz being his favorite target with three catches good for 119 yards and Barrett Moddelmog took in a pair of passes for 43 yards. Kreighton Kanitz led the team on the ground with 82 yards on six carries while Hecox ran for another 66 on 14 totes.
