MOUNDRIDGE – For their opening game of their own Moundridge Early Season Tournament, the Moundridge boys erased a poor first quarter to push past Hillsboro and score a final 11-point, 60-49 victory.
Hillsboro eased out to a three-point, 10-13 lead over the Wildcats by the end of the first quarter before Moundridge put doubled up points on Hillsboro 18-9 in the second quarter to take a six-point, 28-22 lead into the halftime break.
The Wildcats put 19 more points on the scoreboard in the third quarter while holding Hillsboro to just 10 giving them a 15-point, 47-32 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play. While Hillsboro outscored Moundridge by four in the final quarter, the Wildcats held on to earn the final 11-point win.
Kreighton Kanitz, the senior transfer from McPherson, led the Wildcats in scoring with 22 while Barrett Moddelmog hit a pair of three-pointers and hit for 15. Henry Hecox just missed double digits with nine. Moundridge won despite finishing the game without two starters as both Hecox and Kaizer Kanitz fouled out.
Now 2-0 for the season, the Wildcats will continue play in the tournament on Thursday with a county rival battle with Inman before finishing out Friday with a tangle with Lyons.
