MOUNDRIDGE – For the first time in the 2023-24 season, the defending Class 2A state champion Moundridge boys lost on Friday at home as Cheney pulled away in the final eight minutes to score the 51-59 win.
The Wildcats jumped ahead to 20-13 by the end of the first quarter only to have Cheney catch up and tie the game at 26-26 heading into a halftime break.
Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter as they both had just seven points, leaving the still tied at 33-33 heading into the final quarter when Cheney and Moundridge put up a total of 44 combined points with Cheney getting the final eight-point victory.
Barrett Moddelmog connected on three three-pointers to led the Wildcats with 17 points. Kreighton Kanitz chipped in with 13 and Henry Hecox used a pair of threes to score 12.
Now 5-1 on the season, the Wildcats are off for the Christmas break and will return to the competitive hardwood on Tuesday, January 2 and Friday, January 5 on the road at Oxford and Marion.
