WILDCATS BURY BENNINGTON IN 2-GAME SWEEP

Schmidt Goes 8-for-9  with 2-2B, 1-HR.

BENNINGTON – On Tuesday, the Moundridge baseball team let  loose the bats and buried Bennington on the road with a doubleheader sweep, winning 14-2 and 19-2.

 

With the wins, the Wildcats sit at 6-0 for the season as they get ready to play host to Sedgwick for a doubleheader on Friday.

 

Layton Schmidt was the star of the day for the Wildcats as he pounded out eight hits in nine at bats while knocking across seven runs, scoring seven times, and hammering out two doubles and a home run in the two games.

 

In game one, the Wildcats used a dozen hits to score 14 runs, including six in the second and five in the fourth to get the final 14-2 victory.

 

Layton Schmidt and Logan Greenwalt each had three hits with Schmidt also getting three runs batted in thanks to a double. Greenwalt also accounted for three runs batted in.

 

Lane Durst and London Ward combined to throw 95 pitches over five innings and limit Bennington to just a pair of hits, five  walks and five strikeouts.

 

In the second game, the Wildcats held a 9-1 lead going into the top of the seventh when they erupted for 10 runs in gaining their second win of day, 19-2.

 

Schmidt again led  the bats, going 5-for-5  with four runs batted in and four runs scored thanks to pounding out both a double and home  run.

 

As a team, Moundridge totaled 15 hits, including two each from Ty Rains, Lane Durst, Atley Lichti, and Clay Wilson. Both Lane and Isaac Durst each scored three times.

 

Atley Lichti started the game and went five innings before Clay Wilson came on in relief for the final two. The pair needed just 88 pitches to hold Bennington to six hits, one earned run, three walks and a single strikeout.
