LINDSBORG – In their home debut for the 2024 season, the Smoky Valley baseball team rallied to win game one before losing game two in the final inning to get a split of a doubleheader with Hillsboro on Friday.
In game one, Hillsboro was up 7-0 halfway through the fourth inning before Smoky Valley put six runs on the scoreboard to pull within one in the bottom of the fourth. After the Trojans added another run in the top of the fifth, the Vikings tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the fifth and then added a run in the top of the sixth on a Charlie Bowman single to take the lead and get the 9-8 win.
Ty Heitschmidt and Aiden Hill both had a pair scored a pair of runs and smacked out a pair of hits with Marik Anderson and Nolan Moore each getting a pair of runs batted in. Heitschmidt, Hill, Moore, and Kyler Ringle each pounded out a double in the game as well.
Nolan Moore began the game on the mound for the Vikings and threw 103 pitches, gave up seven hits, walked just two and struck out ten before giving way to Aiden Hill in relief.
In the nightcap, the Vikings struggled scoring runs despite having 14 hits in the game as they sacrificed a 4-0 lead through six innings when Hillsboro pushed across five runs in the top of the seventh to get the one-run, 4-5 victory over Smoky Valley.
The loss overs shadowed an outstanding game for Ty Heitschmidt as he went three-for-four at the plate with a double and two runs batted in while also manning the mound for 6.1 innings where he used 108 pitches to hold Hillsboro to just a pair of hits along with walking four and striking out 13.
Now 1-3 for the season, the Vikings will host Haven on Tuesday before traveling to Sterling on Friday.
