Hosted Hillsboro, At Augusta Tournament

LINDSBORG – Despite some weather, the Smoky Valley wrestlers were busy with both the Viking boys and Lady Vikings hosting Hillsboro on Thursday before the Viking boys competed in a tournament at Augusta on the weekend.

On Thursday in front of the home fans, the Viking boys took care of business in a dominating fashion as they defeated Hillsboro 52-9 while the Lady Vikings won 30-0.

For the Viking boys against Hillsboro, they won 10 of 11 matches wrestled with both teams forfeiting in three weight divisions.

Of the Viking winners, seven did so by a fall while one had a major decision and two won by forfeit. Hayden Gehrke at 165 won by a fall in less than a minute with Rhett Gaskill at 126 and Connor Barnes at 132 each getting wins by fall in less than one-and-a-half minutes.

For the Lady Vikings, all five girls scored wins by a fall which included a fall win by Magdalene Riedel at 155 in less than a minute.

At Augusta over the weekend, the Viking boys finished fifth as a team with 110.0 points as they were led by Parker Gardner who had a huge tournament wrestling at 175 as he finished 5-0 and took first place. Gardner won two matches by falls, one by a major decision and one by a decision with one by a forfeit.

The other top-3 finish came from Connor Barnes at 132 where he finished 4-2. In the junior varsity tournament, the lone Viking wrestler was Ben Zeller at 175. Zeller did outstanding, going 3-0 and finishing first.

Next up for the Smoky Valley wrestlers will be on Thursday, January 11 when they travel to Hoisington.
