Mullen Qualifies for State

COUNCIL GROVE – Last Saturday, the Smoky Valley cross country teams went to Council Grove for their Class 3A State Regionals and came home with a fourth and sixth place finish plus one runner qualifying for state.

The Lady Vikings ended regionals with a sixth-place team finish behind Southeast of Saline, West Franklin, Osage City, Prairie View and Olathe Heritage Christian.

Individually, senior Lady Viking Keira Mullen ran a season best 20:53.62 which earned a medal and a trip to the State Meet on Saturday at Rim Rock in Lawrence. Three other Lady Vikings earned season best times as Sophia Eyer finished nineteenth, Esther Clark ran twentieth, and Emma Chaput finished thirty-fourth.

While no Viking boys qualified for state, they did record four season best times while finishing fourth as a team behind Southeast of Saline, West Franklin and Santa Fe Trail.

Britton Becker had the best finish for the Smoky Valley boys as he ran a season best time of 18:00.11. Samuel Peterson, Brayden Eyer and Elijah Spooner also ran season best times as they ran sixteenth, seventeenth, and sixty-first.

Of the 13 Viking runners at regionals, four were seniors, four were juniors, two were sophomores and three were just freshman.
