RILEY COUNTY – The Smoky Valley boys wrestling team began their 2023-24 season on Saturday at the Riley County Duals Tournament where they won a pair and lost a pair of matches.


The Vikings opened the day with a 40-33 team win over host Riley County as the Vikings earned eight wins, five by falls.


Against Hoyt/Royal Valley, Smoky Valley scored a second victory, this time 45-24 as they won nine matches, two by falls.


Against powerhouse Clay Center, the Vikings were humbled with a 24-56 loss at they managed just four wins, all by falls.


In their first match of the Championship Bracker, the Vikings lost 24-57 to Marysville, again winning just four matches, this time only two by falls.


Individually, Connor Barnes at 132 went 4-0 on the day with all his wins being by a fall. Charlie Bowman at 106, Andrew Young at 150 and Christian Erickson at 157 each finished 3-1.


Next trip to the competitive mat for the Smoky Valley Viking wrestlers will come on Thursday, December 7 when they travel to Chapman.
