INMAN – The 2023-24 season for the Inman boys basketball program will be much different as they lose four starters from a team that finished 18-4 last season before losing to eventual Class 2A state champion Moundridge in their sub-state semifinals.

Teuton head coach Brett Froese begins his 15-season guiding the boys program and while he really was not sure what his career record was, he did mention he is close to reaching the 200-victory plateau.

With the upcoming season, Froese will be needing to replace four starters as Eli Brunk, Harrison Brunk and Josiah Buller all graduated and Tanner Heckel, a senior to be who transferred to Lyndon where his mother found a new job. Without Heckel and Eli Brunk the Teutons lose a large amount of their offense as the pair combined to average 34.4 points and 10 rebounds per game.

“Our team this season will look a lot different than the past couple of seasons as we lost a ton of players, including the three seniors who graduated in the spring – they were a huge part of our success,” noted coach Froese. “Then losing Tanner (Heckel) to transfer, that was another major key loss. We will most likely end up playing a lot of young guys throughout the season. We do have a really nice freshman class that will get better every day in practice.”

The lone returning starter for the Teutons will be six-foot-two senior Zach Martisko. Other than a bunch of newcomers, the four returning letter winners from last season will include seniors Kellen Schrag and Talon Welch along with juniors Brody Froese and TJ Froese.

Coach Froese concluded his pre-season reflections by adding, “My approach has always been to coach to the skillset we have as a team. I think when you coach at a small school that is important. I have certain core things that we will always do but you have to be able to adjust accordingly to what kind of players you might have that season. Some years you slow it down and some years you really speed it up. I will just try and coach to what I think gives us the best opportunity to succeed.”

The opening game of the 2023-24 season will come on Friday, December 1 when Inman plays host to Minneapolis.
