VIKINGS LOSE SLUGFEST 55-44 TO TRINITY ACADEMY

            LINDSBORG – It was an offensive slugfest on Friday in Lindsborg as the Smoky Valley football team battled Trinity Academy, ringing up 963 yards in offense on 120 offensive snaps between the teams before the Vikings took a 55-44 loss.

            The Vikings held their own in the first half, leading 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and trailing by five at 35-30 heading into the halftime break.

            Coming out in the second half, the Knights put 13 more on the board in the third quarter before adding another seven in the fourth while holding Smoky Valley to just eight in the third and six in the fourth, giving the Vikings the final 11-point loss.

            While Smoky Valley had maybe their best offensive show of the season with 425 yards in offense on 66 plays, including 364 on the ground, Trinity Academy rang up 538 yards on 54 plays with 414 of that in the air.

            On offense, the Vikings were led by Gavin Stambaugh who had a career game with 262 yards on 29 carries and four touchdowns while Ezekiel Baker also cross the 100-yard mark with 102 yards rushing on 19 totes with a pair of scores. Ty Heitschmidt threw for 61 yards as well.

            Defensively, Geo Luis led the Vikings with seven tackles and one quarterback sack while Crew Elliott recorded six tackles and both Stambaugh and Jack Opat had five. Thirteen Vikings recorded at least a pair of tackles in the game.

            Next up for the 1-3 Vikings will be a road trip to Hesston on Friday to battle the Swathers who will enter the game unbeaten at 4-0 after defeating Nickerson, 53-6 on Friday.
