STAMBAUGH, BAKER CARRY VIKINGS PAST BELLE PLAINE 43-0

            LINDSBORG – The two-headed running monster of Gavin Stambaugh and Zeke Baker carried the Smoky Valley football team to a smash down at home on Friday, beating visiting Belle Plaine, 43-0.

 

            Viking seniors Stambaugh and Baker pounded Belle Plaine for 206 yards on 26 carries while scoring all six Smoky Valley touchdowns.

            Stambaugh seemed to have the end zone in sight all evening as he scored five touchdowns on runs of five and nine yards in the first quarter, thirteen and seven yards in the second quarter before closing out the day with a six-yard score in the third quarter.

 

            Baker scored from 21 yards in the first quarter as the Vikings took an immediate 22-0 advantage and  then added two more scores in the second for a 37-0 halftime lead.

 

            Overall, the Vikings ran for 309 yards on 53 totes while picking up 56 yards through the air for a total 365 yards on 53 plays.

 

            Baker topped the team with 16 carries for 113 yards and Stambaugh finished with 92 yards on just ten carries. A total of nine Vikings recorded a carry in the game. Ty Heitschmidt directed most of the offense and completed three-of-six for 46 yards with Breckin Roger completing his only pass for ten.

 

            Defensively, Smoky Valley held Belle Plaine to just 110 yards on 43 offensive plays that included just 40 yards rushing the ball on 18 carries. The Vikings also forced a pair of turnovers.

 

            Individually on the stops, 18 Vikings recorded a tackle in the game with Andrew Lochard and Stambaugh leading the way with 4.5 and 4, respectively.

 

            Next up will be the Vikings first road trip of the season as they travel to Haven on Friday, September 20. Haven is 2-0 and coming off a 56-8 beat down of Nickerson as they have scored over 50 points in both games this season.
