LADY VIKINGS, VIKINGS BOTH TAKE 1ST

HESSTON – On Saturday, the Smoky Valley girls and boys wrestling teams went south to compete in the Hesston Invitational and both teams brought home a team championship along with a total of six individual champions and six runners-up.

For the Lady Vikings, they won the team championship as they rolled up 125 team points, well ahead of second-place Maize with 63 to win the team title. Lyons, Hesston, and Belleville/Republic County rounded out the top five of the ten teams competing.

Individually, Smoky Valley brought home five individual champions including Kenzlie Crain at 120, Keira Mullen at 135, Kasyn French at 140, Gemma Carter at 145 and Kate Griffin at 170. Mullen won all her matches by a fall and is now 10-0 on the season.

Both Petyon Wesley at 100/105 and Echo Clark Pavlovich at 115 finished second, with the other two Lady Vikings competing both finishing third.

In the boys division, the Vikings totaled 149.5 team points, to take the team championship a good 30.5 points ahead of second place Belleville/Republic County. Lyons, Hesston and Chaparral closed out the top five of the ten teams competing.

Parker Gardner, wrestling at 175, brought home the lone individual championship though Deonte Crain at 113, Rhett Gaskill at 126, Connor Barnes at 132, and Geovanni Luis at 190 each took second in their divisions. Takoda Hauck, Jakorian Crain, and Christian Erickson all finished third.

Next up for the Smoky Valley wrestlers comes on Thursday and Friday, December 14 and 15 when they wrestle at Abilene, the final set of matches before the Christmas break.
