WILDCATS WIN AGAIN, 28-7 AT STERLING
By Staff
STERLING – The Moundridge football team continues to roll as they continue to adjust to moving up to 11-man football, with a 28-7 win on the road Friday at Sterling.
Ranked seventh in Class 1A after week one, the Wildcats scored a touchdown in each of the four quarters beginning with a 17-yard scoring pass from Henry Hecox to Bear Moddelmog in the first quarter giving Moundridge an early 7-0 advantage.
After Hecox connected with Kaizer Kanitz for a six-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, Sterling bounced back and found the end zone to stay within a touchdown, 14-7, entering the halftime break.
Kanitz dashed in for a score from 20 yards in the third quarter and Logan Greenwaldt rambled in from 16 for a score in the fourth to finalize the 28-7 win.

As a team, the Wildcats rolled up 297 yards in offense with the yards split evenly in half at 145 yards passing and 152 yards running the ball. Both teams had 14 first downs and Sterling nicked the Moundridge defense for 233 total yards.
Individually, Henry Hecox threw for 126 yards going eight of fourteen in passes while Kaizer Kanitz completed all three of his passes good for 19 yards.
Kanitz ran the ball seven times for 63 yards and Hecox picked up 39.
Defensively, Paul Grill was in on 10 tackles and Braden DenHartog had eight, Kanitz and Brayden Elmore each recorded seven. Three Wildcats were in on six tackles including Hecox, Logan Greenwaldt and Thomas Jenkins. Fynn Burge and Kanitz each grabbed a pass interception as well.
In his brief reflections on the game, Wildcat head coach Tyler O’Connor noted, “We fought off a tough Sterling team tonight. I thought we did a great job matching their physicality up front. We are happy to come out with a win against a good team as we continue to grow in the 11-man game.”
Now 2-0 on the young season, the Wildcats will make their 2024 season home debut on Friday, September 20 when they play host to Medicine Lodge. Medicine Lodge entered Friday’s game with Chaparral as the second-ranked team in Class 1A.
