WILDCATS REMAIN UNBEATED, NIP SEDGWICK IN 0T

MOUNDRIDGE – In possibly the toughest game of the season to date, the Moundridge football team remained unbeaten on Friday when they hung on to earn a one-point, 41-40 home field win over Sedgwick.
With the win, the Wildcats, currently ranked number six in Class 1A, remained unbeaten at 6-0 while Sedgwick who was also unbeaten and ranked number three in Class 1A coming into the game.
Both Moundridge and Sedgwick scored twice in the first quarter with the Wildcats getting a score on a 27-yard pass play from Henry Hecox to Kaizer Kanitz before Hecox scored diving in from the one-yard line.
After Kanitz and Hecox connected on another scoring pass play in the second quarter, the Wildcats kicked the extra point and since Sedgwick missed their two-point conversion attempt, Moundridge hit the halftime break with a one point, 21-20 advantage.
Hecox connected with Kanitz and Bear Moddelmog for a pair of scoring passes in the third quarter as the Wildcats took a 34-26 lead into the final quarter of action where Sedgwick tied the score to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Hecox tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to Moddelmog and with the extra point took a 41-34 lead. Sedgwick scored but failed on a two-point conversion for the win, giving the Wildcats the final one-point 41-40 victory.
In his post-game reflections, Wildcat head coach Tyler O’Connor noted, “It was an exciting game against a high caliber team. Our experience helped us tremendously when it came down to a big moment in the game and our guys responded each time they needed to. Could not be prouder of the kids and their resiliency.”
The two teams combined for 782 yards of offense on over 130 snaps with both teams combining to throw for 662 yards passing.
Individually for the Wildcats, Hecox completed 21-of-34 passes for 364 yards and five touchdowns. Kaizer Kanitz pulled in 13 passed for 205 yards and three scores while Bear Moddelmog caught four for 78 yards and a pair of scores.
Defensively, Hecox totaled nine tackles and Braden Elmore had six with Josh Koehn and Ben DenHartog each getting credit for five.
The Wildcats will close out the regular season part of the 2024 schedule with a road trip to county rival Inman on Friday. The Teutons are 4-3 after defeating Bennington 47-14 on Friday.
