MARION – In a low scoring, hard-fought battle, the Moundridge football team held on Friday to defeat Marion on the road, 12-8.

“We were fortunate to come out of this one with a victory,” noted Wildcat head coach Tyler O’Connor.

After Marion took an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter, Moundridge scored on a 13-yard pass from Henry Hecox to Fynn Burge. After failing to make good on the two-point conversion, the Wildcats trailed  8-6, a score that stayed in place until the fourth  quarter.

Bear Moddelmog broke loose  on a 31-yard pass play from Hecox to give Moundridge the lead in the final quarter, a lead they held to win the game by four points, 12-8.

Just like the scoreboard, the game was close with all the stats as the Wildcats led the two teams in first downs, 12-10, and total offense with 209 yards on 56 plays while Marion picked up 167 yards on 43 offensive snaps.

Offensively, Henry Hecox completed eight of thirteen passes for 134 yards while Paul Grill had 31 yards rushing. Moddelmog was the favorite receiver, catching three passes for a total of 80 yards.

On defense, Grill totaled nine tackles, Kaizer Kanitz had seven and Ben DenHartog had five.

Referencing his team’s work on Friday, coach O’Connor finished his post-game reflections by adding, “Our defense did a good job of staying disciplined and tough which kept us in the game. Our leadership and experience allowed us to find a way to win in the end.”

The win leaves the Wildcats at 5-0 for the season as they prep to host Sedgwick on Friday. The  Cardinals are ranked number three in Class 1A  and  will come into the game 6-0 after winning 61=29 over Inman last week.
