MCPHERSON – The McPheron Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball team opened their 2024 season with a pair of wins each against El Dorado and Haysville.

On Thursday, the seventh-grade Junior Pups scored a 33-point, 47-14 win over El Dorado in their ‘A’ team game while also pulling off a 13-point, 30-17 win in the ‘B’ game.

Eli Soeken led the team in scoring with 18 points in the ‘A’ game with Eli Reasoner also making double digits with 10.

“For our first game of the season I thought we played extremely hard in both games,” noted seventh-grade head coach Jay Crawford. “I am so proud of the effort we played with and how we shared the ball. Our defense really made it difficult for El Dorado to run any offense. We made 18 steals in both games. Still a lot to work on, but getting our first win was nice.”

In the ‘B’ game, both Kobee Jimenez and Kinnick Anderson scored nine.

Vs. El Dorado Scoring:

‘A’ GAME (47)  > Eli Soeken – 18; Eli Reasoner – 10; Brandon Ek – 8; Parker Riemann – 6; Trey Fiedler – 3; Hunter Vogelsberg – 2.

‘B’ GAME (30) > Kobee Jimenez – 9; Kinnick Anderson – 9; Jake Evans – 8; Hunter Vogelsberg – 4.

On Monday, both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams moved to 2-0 on the season with a pair of wins over Haysville. The ‘A’ team won 34-27 while the ‘B’ team scored a 30-26 victory.

In the ‘A’ game, Eli Reasoner erupted for 20 points to lead the Junior Pups in scoring while Brandon Ek chipped in with 10.

“I was very proud of how we competed and once we lost the lead we did not blink, we just played with grit and made stops followed by big shots after big shots,” explained coach Crawford. “It was great to see this team win a hard-fought game. There is a lot we can improve on, and we will.”

Kobee Jimenez with 12 points and Hunter Vogelsberg  with nine led the ‘B’ team to a four-point, 30-26 win against Haysville.

According to coach Crawford, “This was an exciting game as the players did not quit and worked really hard to hang on and get a big win. To see our guys compete and get on the floor is  how we want them to play.”

With both the seventh-grade Junior Pups ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams sitting at 2-0, they play before the home  crowd for the first time on Thursday when they host Augusta followed  by a road trip to Arkansas City on Saturday.
