Smith leads Redskins to 72-26 win

By Staff
HERINGTON – Passing defense was the only thing keeping Little River football from dismantling Herington on the road Friday as the Redskins scored a 72-26 win.
Now 4-2 on the season, the Redskins will be at home next Friday to tangle with Pretty Prairie who lost 46-12 to Goessel on Friday and is now 0-6 for the season.
Andrew Smith dominated the offensive game for Little River as he completed six-of-eight passes for 103 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also running to 249 yards on 18 carries which was good for another six scores. Smith had his fingers on eight of the team’s ten scores in the game.
Kyler Bergkamp got Little River off to an early lead by taking the opening kickoff 65 yards for a score and then scampered into the end zone from seven yards out as the Redskins took a 14-6 lead.
Little River went up 38-12 by halftime thanks to scoring runs of two, three and fifteen yards by Smith. After halftime Herington scored one more time before Little River exploded for 34 points on three scoring runs by Smith plus scoring passes to Jaren Garrison and Bergkamp.
Besides Smith, Bergkamp ran for 52 yards and caught three passes for 50 yards in pushing the Little River offense up and down the field.
As a team Little River rolled up 454 yards on 56 plays that included a total of 351 yards on the ground.
Defensively, the Redskins held Herington to just 77 yards rushing but did give up 264 yards passing on 17-of-29 throws though the Redskin defense came up with three interceptions, a pair by Bergkamp and one by Smith.
