LITTLE RIVR – From the opening kickoff it was a crazy busy season opening home game for Little River as they combined with visiting Canton/Galva to accumulate 849 in total offense and 82 points before Little River hung on in the final quarter to earn a two-point, 42-40 victory.
Another crazy set of stats, of the 12 touchdowns scored, six came from a distance of 40 yards or more in the game while the first quarter alone saw the two teams put 44 points on the scoreboard and have five scores coming from beyond 40 yards.
The two teams traded scores as Canton/Galva scored first on a 54-yard pass play before Andrew Smith broke loose for a 65-yard run to the end zone. The Eagles scored three more times on 47, 61, and 40 yard runs while Little River’s Kyler Bergkamp dashed for a pair of scores, one from 35 yards out and the other just a seven dash into the end zone. When combined with just one two-point conversion being made, the Eagles held an eight-point, 26-18 lead after one stanza.
Both Carter Stansbury and Andrew Smith scored on short runs of one and five yards in the second quarter and with the Redskins converting both two-point conversions, Little River went into the halftime break with a 34-26 advantage.
The Eagles came out of the break and scored on runs of nine and forty-nine yards while making one of two two-point conversion attempts to take back a six-point, 40-34 lead into the final quarter of play.
Andrew Smith continued to lead the Redskins and scored on a 13-yard run to tie the game and then Little River converted the two-point conversion to earn the slim, two-point 42-40 victory.
It took 68 offensive plays to total 454 yards in offense for Little River with 127 coming through the air and 327 on the ground.
Little River went through Andrew Smith the entire night as he ran for 188 yards, threw for 68 and caught a single pass for another 59, a grand total of 315 on 42 touches. Jaron Garrison ran for 91 yards and Kyler Bergkamp rushed for 53 yards and a pair of scores.
Defensively, the Redskins were led by Bergkamp and Carter Stansbury as they combined for 19 tackles of which 10 were solo stops, seven by Bergkamp.
The game was so played out so evenly and with such high numbers that Little River and Canton/Galva both had but one turnover, a fumble and the final high number they shared, 22 penalties for minus 252 yards combined with the Redskins accounting for 15 of those for a minus 164.
Next challenge for the Redskins will come on Friday, September 8 when they travel to Hope, Kansas to battle with Rural Vista, a 44-18 winner in their season opener.
