LITTLE RIVER – On Friday, the unfathomable happened as the Little River football team lost for the first time in 2024 and it happened late in the game and happened at home, losing by two points, 38-36 to Ell-Saline.

After both teams scored in the first quarter, with Little River’s Logan Renken connecting with Kylar Bergkamp on a 66-yard pass play, Ell-Saline put two scored on the board in the second quarter with the Redskins only scoring once on a 25-yard run by Renken. This left Ell-Saline holding a 22-16 edge at the halftime break.

Little River added a score in the third on another run by Renken but missed the two-point conversion which combined with another score by the Cardinals, left the Redskins down 30-22 heading into the final quarter of play.

After Jaren Garrison tied the game with a four-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter, Ell-Saline put another score on the board and made their two-point conversion to take a 38-30 lead. Logan Schubert took a pass from Renken into the end zone for yet another score for the Redskins, but they failed to make the two-point conversion and lost by two, 38-36.

Little River had more yards in total offense, 391-374, and took more snaps on offense, 53-51 but suffered on the scoreboard due to missing a pair of two-point conversions.

The Redskins ran for 246 yards with Garrison covering 137 on 19 carries while Renken ran for 87 on 20 totes. Renken also threw for 106 yards but had a pair of interceptions.

Defensively, the Redskins were led by Jhett Ewertt with 10 total tackles while Kyler Bergkamp had seven.

Now 5-1 for the season, Little River will host Central Plains on Friday. The Oilers will enter the game also 5-1 after hammering Canton/Galva 46-0 on Friday.
