BOTH LITTLE RIVER BOYS & GIRLS WIN AT ST. JOHN TOURNEY

ST. JOHN – It was a big opening night on Monday at the St. John Mid-Winter Classic for the Little River boys’ and girls’ basketball teams as the boys nipped Larned 45-43 and the girls buried Nickerson 79-16.

For the Redskin boys, they opened the game with six-point, 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and still held the sis-point advantage, 25-19, heading into the halftime break. Larned pulled within one point, 37-36 at the end of the third quarter before Little River hung on for the final two-point, 45-43, winning margin.
Larned held a 24-38 advantage in rebounding, while the Little River forced Larned into 20 turnovers and knocked down ten three-point shots.
Both Logan Renken and Jaxson Konen led the Redskins in both scoring with 12 points each, and rebounding as both pulled down seven. Renken scored all his points on four three-pointers and Konen scored on three.
Next up for the Redskins will be the Classic semi-final matchup with Central Plains on Thursday as Central Plains beat Nickerson 51-35 on Monday.
For the Class 1A Division I top-ranked Lady Redskins, they rolled past Nickerson on Monday, scoring a 63-point, 79-16 victory.
Among the team highlights had to be pulling down 37 rebounds and connecting on 11 three-pointers, led by six for Arika Feldman who led the Lady Redskins in scoring with a whopping 29 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.
Three other Little River girls reached double digits in the scorebook as both Avery Lafferty and Evie Look scored 14 and Adelynne Strecker chipped in with 13. Lafferty just missed a double -double with nine rebounds to go with five steals while Look grabbed five rebounds as well. Ten Lady Redskins recorded a rebound and eight added both an assist and steal by their name in the stat book as well.
With the win the Lady Redskins will now play tournament host St. John on Thursday in the Classic semi-final.
