STERLING – On Tuesday, the Moundridge softball team traveled to Sterling and split a doubleheader as Sam Strausz goes four-of-five at the plate with a pair of home runs to lead the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Wildcats won game one 13-5 before losing in the seventh inning of game two, 11-13.

“In game one we took advantage of what Sterling gave us and had a lot of two out hits,” noted Lady Wildcat head coach Lynn Eichelberger. “Sophomore Sam Strausz had a huge game while Macy Kaminkow was on base in front of Strausz all game lone. Lela Winsor pitched a great game while freshman Izzy Durst hit for a triple.”

In that first game the Lady Wildcats took a quick  3-0 lead in the first inning and lead 6-2 heading into the seventh inning where they poured across seven runs in getting the final 13-5 victory.

Sam Strausz went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, two runs scored and a pair of home runs while accounting for six runs batted in. Macy Kaminkow went 4-for-5 herself and scored three times, Mac Soden was 2-for-4 and Izzy Durst had a two-run triple.

Lela Winsor was outstanding on the mound as she used 106 pitches to limit the Lady Black Bears to just five hits, three earned runs, no walks and 11 strikeouts.

Sterling jumped out to a 10-3 lead after three innings before Moundridge  put seven runs across in the top of the fourth to tie it up. After the Lady Wildcats kept the game tied at 11-11 with a run in the top of the sixth, Sterling added a pair of runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth to take the final two-run, 11-13 win over Moundridge.

Stausz once again led the Lady Wildcat offense by going 2-for-3 with four runs batted in.

Coach Eichelberger concluded his reflections on the second game by saying, “We did not play well defensively in the second game as we gave Sterling too many chances. I liked how we got down 2-10 after three innings but fought our way back to tie it at 10-10. We had an error in the bottom of the sixth that cost us the pair of runs that beat us. (Sam) Strausz again continued to hit the ball well while (Mac) Soden hit the ball hard all night. Winsor only gave up three earned runs in the loss while striking out six.”

Even at 5-5 for the season, the Lady Wildcats will play host to Canton/Galva/Elyria Christian on Friday.
