MOUNDRIDGE - Brooke Bumgarner begins her third season in charge of the Lady Wildcat spikers and to this point holds an overall record of 31-42 in her first three seasons. She will be assisted by Sabrina Peavy.
“Last season we had a more successful season than the year previous,” noted coach Bumgarner. “We had a pretty good group of athletic girls who worked hard. Unfortunately, we struggled with consistency and split a lot of games with other teams within our league. What was good for us was we did place third at the Goessel Tournament in 2022, however we went just 7-11 in Heart of America League games and just 18-20 overall.”
One item on the checklist of things to get done will be replacing five starters from the 2022 team as Emily Durst, Aubree Durst, Kindall Elmore, Reese Schmidt, and Avery Rice all graduated.
While that is a bunch of playing time experience that will be missing, Bumgarner will lean on senior Kaelyn Wedel along with three sophomores in Cammi Unruh, Macy Kaminkow and Addysen Patrick to pick up where they left off last season, especially the three sophomores who all showed tremendous talent as freshmen last season.
Looking to fill in some empty holes in the lineup will be three highly promising freshmen in twins Hattie and Halle Hecox as well as Isabelle Durst.
Coach Bumgarner finished off reflecting on the upcoming 2023 season by saying, “It is true that we lost five starting seniors, all of whom played in our six man rotations. But we also have some great talent returning, though it will be considered a big rebuilding year for us because of those five seniors we lost to graduation. Out freshman class of girls outnumbers how many returning players we have, so they will push the rest of the team while challenging for on the court, game time playing spots. I do look for our team to work hard and be competitive throughout the 2023 season!”
