ABILENE – It was a good start to a new season on Friday as the Smoky Valley girls basketball team went on the road to Abilene and prevailed in securing a 29-point, 45-16 win.

The Lady Vikings jumped out to an early 10-point 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched the lead out to 15 at 27-12 by the time the two teams hit the halftime break.

It was all defense in the third quarter as Smoky Valley held Abilene to zero points while putting eight on the board for a 23-point advantage as they then cruised through the fourth quarter to reach the final 29-point victory.

Pressing defense by the Lady Vikings forced Abilene into making 29 turnovers, including 14 steals by Smoky Valley led by four each from the quick hands of Adrian Hazelwood and Breanne Peters.

Hazelwood led the Lady Viking offense with 13 points while Katja Blanchat also reached double digits with 10 and just missing a double-double by grabbing a team high eight rebounds.
