McPHERSON – Hosting the annual Doug Gayer Classic Tennis Tournament, the McPherson girls tennis team put two teams on the courts and had one win the tournament while the other finished ninth, with the Kuhn sisters, Riggs and Brodie won the doubles competition.

“I always love this tournament,” explained Lady Bullpup head coach Tyler Brown. “The Doug Gayer Classic! Having played for Doug and having coached with him, I always want my players to do well in this tournament because Doug left such a legacy behind, and you want to make him proud.”

The Lady Bullpup ‘Red’ team won the tournament with 83 points while being led by the doubles duo of Riggs and Brodie Kuhn who went 4-0 to take first place in the doubles competition.

The tandem of Avery Unruh and Dragon Rodriguez went 3-1 to place second in the doubles competition while the two singles went 6-2 between them and finished third and fifth.

Speaking of his ‘Red’ team, coach Brown noted, “Team ‘Red’ was pretty flawless today from our four entries. Singles, with the makeup of the Sandbo sisters who took care of business and finished almost exactly where they were seeded. They both finished the day with a record of 3-1. The Kuhn sisters were just dominant all day, only losing three out of 35 games played. That is pretty remarkable! They have been locked in and it has been fun to watch and coach them. The surprise of the day though, came from the duo of Avery Unruh and Dragon Rodriguez as they upset the number three and second seeds back-to-back. Team ‘Red’ showed why they should be a team to watch for.”

As for the Lady Bullpup ‘White’ team, they finished ninth with 31 points with the doubles duo of Erin Olson and Avery Eveland had the best finish by landing in 11th place with a 2-2 record.

Talking about the ‘White’ team, Brown continued his post tournament reflections by saying, “These girls gained valuable experience playing in a 22 Open Draw format. The fun thing about this format is it’s only two entries shy of the state tournament bracket which is a 24 Open Draw. The girls that made up this team realized how important that first match is if you want to place fairly high at a tournament. Even though most of these girls opened the tournament losing their first match, almost all of them bounced back, winning multiple matches to finish strong on the day.”

Next up for the Lady Bullpup netters is a meet at Haysville/Campus on Friday before playing in the Tournament of Champions in Wichita hosted by Wichita Collegiate on Saturday.
