WINFIELD – At Winfield on Monday, the McPherson girls tennis team participated in the AVCTL (Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League) Tournament and came home with a handful for second place finishes.
As a team, the Lady Bullpups placed second with 51 points, well behind league champion Wichita Collegiate who scored 70. Wellington, Buhler and Augusta rounded out the top five.
“The league tournament was great to lead into Regionals on Friday in Buhler,” explained Lady Bullpup head coach Tyler Brown. “It allows the girls to get a feel for the format that we will be playing from here on out moving from eight game pro sets to two out of three sets which can always prove to be challenging. Overall, we handled it really well.”
Both the Lady Bullpup doubles tandems, Avery Unruh and Dragon Rodriguez plus sisters Riggs and Brodie Kuhn finished second on the day.
Kyndall Sandbo placed second as well in number two singles while Maryn Sandbo finished fifth in number one singles.
Coach Brown concluded his post league tournament reflections by saying, “We had a Wichita Collegiate vs McPherson showdown in three for the four divisions with Collegiate getting the best of McPherson in all the matches. I feel all the gilrs played well and showed fight throughout the League Tournament and a few of them picked up some much needed wins to help their case in the Regional seeding meeting.”
