McPHERSON – Between a dual on Tuesday and a Saturday Invitational, the McPherson volleyball team put seven matches in the books last week, going 4-3 overall and finishing fourth at the Newton Invitational.

On Tuesday, the Lady Bullpups traveled to Augusta for a triangular where they went 2-0 with straight set wins over both host Augusta (28-26/25-11) and Mulvane (25-16/25-12).

Leading in the stat sheets at Augusta through the two matches were Alex Romero with 38 assists and 23 digs. Addison Chapman recorded four blocks, 18 digs and 11 kills, while Ava Romero tied with Brooke Doile with a team high 12 kills.

On Saturday, the Lady Bullpups participated in the Newton Invitational where they finished 2-3 over five matches, winning their first two before losing the final three and placing fourth overall.

Against Buhler and host Newton, McPherson started the day with a pair of straight set victories, beating Buhler, 25-23 and 25-17, before taking care of the Lady Railers, 25-12 and 25-21. They then took powerhouse Andale to three sets before losing (21-25, 25-18, 12-25).

In the first match of bracket play, the Lady Bullpups lost in straight sets to Andover Central, 15-25 and 21-25 which set them up for a rematch with Andale. This time Andale beat McPherson in straight sets but only by five total points, 22-25 and 23-25.

Ava Romero was named to the all-tournament team after leading the Lady Bullpups in kills with 38 and making 36 digs to go with five service aces. Alex Romero dished out 98 assists for the day, Brooke Doile and Haely Hagemann each made 44 digs and 26 kills while Hagemann had the most service aces with seven.

The Lady Bullpups are now 13-5 for the season and will be on the road in Towanda on Tuesday to battle with Circle.
