MCPHERSON - Hosting their own nine-team junior varsity tennis invitational on Tuesday, the McPherson High girls tennis team entered two teams and not only earned an invitational team championship, but also saw a number one doubles team bring home a first-place trophy as well.

“We had a wonderful afternoon of tennis,” noted Lady Bullpup junior varsity coach Ricardo Sanchez. “We were able to have 10 of our players compete and a lot of them did so for the first time this season! Nerves were evident across many courts today, as many of our freshmen were competing for the first time in a high school setting. I feel like once we were able to settle down, our girls played really well.”

McPherson was split into two teams, the ‘Red’ team scored the team title for the invitational with 29 points, beating out rival and runner-up Buhler by one point. Valley Center finished third with Great Bend and Hesston rounding out the top five. The Lady Bullpup ‘White’ team finished seventh out of nine teams with eight points.

The ‘Red’ team tandem of Jordan Martens, a senior, and Piper VanCampen, just a freshman, had a huge day, going 5-0 in matches to win the number one doubles division while Adelaid Crocker and Sophie Boese at number two doubles went 3-1 to finish third.

Competing for the ‘Red’ team, Jadin Nowell and Kennedy Tully went a combined 7-3 at number two and number one singles, giving them both second-place finishes.

The top finish for the Lady Bullpup ‘White’ team came from their number one singles duo of Ava Miller and Breanna Sullivan who went 2-2 to place fourth.

Coach Sanchez finished his reflections on the day by adding, “Some of the highlights came from our upperclassmen stepping up to be leaders on the court by showing how to take care of business. Seniors Jordan (Martens) and Jadin (Nowell) plus junior Kennedy (Tully) finished a combined 12-3 and all placed either first or second in their divisions. Great example to set for our younger players. Ady (Crocker) and Sophie (Boese) also had a stellar day, bouncing back to finish third after losing their only match of the day on a 5-5 deuce point, which showed great mental strength. So many girls had shining moments today. We are proud of all their efforts today and look to build on it for a successful season!”

Next up on the schedule for the Lady Bullpup junior varsity tennis team will come on Tuesday, September 5 when they host another junior varsity invitational, this time with teams such as Andover, Derby, Goddard Eisenhower, Haysville/Campus, Hutchinson and Newton.
