McPHERSON – Using a morning start to beat the heat, the McPherson High junior varsity girls tennis team dominated the field of their home invitational and scored a team championship as well as three individual wins.

“Today was a beautiful morning of tennis,” exclaimed junior varsity Lady Bullpup coach Ricardo Sanchez. “We had ten players in the tournament today and everyone has shown improvement form the last tournament.”

With the junior varsity split into two teams, the McPherson ‘Red’ team ran away with the team championship as they scored 30 points for the invitational team title, followed by Andover (23), Goddard Eisenhower (18) and Derby (16) in the top four. Others competing were Hutchinson, Newton, Haysville/Campus, and the Lady Bullpup ‘White’ team.

The Lady Bullpup ‘Red’ team nearly made it a clean sweep as they took first in three of the four divisions as they won both number one singles with Kennedy Tulley and number two singles with Ady Crocker while also getting a win from the tandem of Jordan Martens and Piper VanCampen at number one doubles. The number two doubles duo of Jadin Nowell and Sophie Boese finished second, just missing a clean sweep for the ‘Red’ team.

Speaking of the ‘Red’ team, coach Sanchez continued by saying, “Jordan (Martens) and Piper (VanCampen) continue to roll through doubles as they now have gone 8-0 in the last two junior varsity tournaments as a tandem. Kennedy (Tulley) won a tight pool-play match before claiming first place in singles. Ady (Crocker) also had a great day by going undefeated and winning a pair of 6-5 matches!”

The Lady Bullpup ‘White’ team placed sixth as a team but did get a second-place finish in number one singles from Ava Miller who upset several players before losing to fellow Lady Bullpup Kennedy Tulley in the finals.

Coach Sanchez concluded his post invitational reflections by adding, “So many girls played that it is hard to talk about all of them, but they are all showing signs of improvement.”

Next up for the junior varsity Lady Bullpup netters comes on Thursday at an invitational in Buhler.
