MAIZE – Wonder if the other teams at the Maize South Middle School Girls Tennis Invitational saw it coming on Monday as the McPherson Middle School girls tennis team dominated by scoring a perfect 40 points while winning all six divisions of competition.
“Wow, what a day of great tennis by our Middle School team,” exclaimed Junior Lady Pup head coach Paul Reichenberger. “These girls battled hard all day long and took home first-place in every bracket. I could not be prouder of them!!”
In the singles competition, both Quinn Liebl and Audra Sandbo dominated their brackets as they both went undefeated for the day and showed why they are two of the very best eighth grade girl tennis players in the area. Playing the third singles bracket, Kamryn Prescott impressed everyone with a comeback from losing early to win the number three bracket.
“Quinn (Liebl) and Audra (Sandbo) have worked so hard on their game outside of the tennis season and it paid off in their matches today,” pointed out coach Reichenberger. “After losing early, Kamryn (Prescott) was able to win out the rest of the day including a very close final match that ended in a tiebreaker which she won. She has a bright future in Bullpup tennis program, and I think she deserves the award this year for most improved player on the team.”
It was much the same on the doubles side as the duo of Mayson Wiens and Lleyton Kuhn were clearly the best doubles duo at the tournament. They won their bracket championship match 6-0.
At number two doubles, the tandem of Maddie Ekholm and Emily Reno may have had the most exciting matches of the day which was highlighted by a comeback tiebreaker victory where they won seven straight points after being down 1-6.
Hayden Eveland and Nirmatha PremAnanth also went unbeaten at number three doubles which kept them unbeaten for the season when playing together in doubles brackets.
Coach Reichenberger concluded his post-invitational reflections by discussing the doubles brackets and saying, “Mayson (Wiens) and Lleyton (Kuhn) were locked in and when that happens, nothing can stop them. I was proud of how tough our number two tandem of Maddie (Ekholm) and Emily (Reno) played the entire day and how well they have progressed as a tandem as the day finished out. Our number three doubles pairing Hayden (Eveland) and Nirmatha (PremAnanth) also had a great day and stayed unbeaten for the season.”
The Junior Lady Pups are scheduled to travel to Arkansas City for a makeup with Ark City Middle School on Tuesday, September 19, before hosting Buhler Prairie Hills Middle School on Thursday, September 21.
