‘B’ TEAM TAKES 5TH AT TOURNEY

By Staff
MCPHERSON – It’s been a busy three days for the McPherson Middle School 8th Grade volleyball teams as the ‘B’ team played in a tournament on Saturday in Maize and both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams played in Arkansas City on Monday.
On Saturday, the ‘B’ team participated in a tournament at Maize South where they went 2-1 on the day and finished fifth overall.
The tournament began with a stumble against Derby where they were humbled in straight sets 12-25 and 5-25. After that they bounced back and took down Newton in straight sets 25-10 and 15-21.
In the final match of the day against Salina South, the Junior Lady Pups bounced back to earn a decisive 25-14 win in the first set before Salina South fought them into overtime before McPherson won the second set 27-25.
“In the second set against Salina South we forgot how to communicate and move our feet for a bit,” explained coach Tami Malm. “The girls reset to come from behind and win the second set. Again, we had to change our lineup a little bit, but the girls responded well and helped each other out making it a great team effort today.”
On Monday, both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams traveled to Arkansas City for a triangular with Ark City and Winfield.
The eighth grade ‘A’ team Junior Lady Pups scored a sweep on the day beating both El Dorado (25-13, 25-20) and Ark City (25-21, 25-17) in straight sets.
With the two wins the ‘A’ team raised their season record to 10-3.
“We took a long road trip to Ark City and came home with wins,” pointed out head coach Christine Pianalto. “The ‘A’ team was a bit slow to warm up and at times it got a little lazy with their serving. They were able to string together some great sets and played aggressively at the net. When the games got close, they settled down, focused, and communicated to come out on top.”
For the ‘B’ team, they went three sets against Ark City before winning and then bounced El Dorado in straight sets.
According to coach Tami Malm, “Our first, we lost the first set but then the girls got energized and won the next two. With El Dorado we played well enough to win, putting together some nice sets and getting some hits. Overall, our serving and pass was great tonight.”
With the pair of victories, the ‘B’ team raised their season mark to 7-9.
The eighth-grade Junior Lady Pup spikers are scheduled to be back on the competitive court on Thursday at Newton Chisholm Trail Middle School.
