ELYRIA – On Thursday, the Elyria Christian volleyball team hosted a pair of matches with Canton/Galva and came away with a pair of wins where no set was won by more than five points.

“Tonight, was a fun night of volleyball,” noted Elyria head coach Jayme Gardner. “Canton/Galva is a very good team and they mixed it up on us quite a bit. Our girls had to work really hard at keeping the ball off the floor. I am really proud of how we never believed we were out of it and there were a few times when they would get a good run at us, and we figured out how to rally together and get back to us.”

In the first match, the two team went to three sets to settle the victor as Elyria won by three, 25-22, in set one before Canton/Galva turned the tables and won by two, 23-25, after which Elyria bounced back and earned a four-point, 25-21 win in the third set to get the overall match victory.

Laney Reiff dished out 21 assists and Brooke Davidson recorded 11 kills in the match. The Lady Eagles scored 103 digs in the three-set match with Julia Allen punching out 28 of those, Laney Reiff had 18, Addison Swenson had 15, Macy Reiff and Joy Glendening each had 13 plus Raegan Broadhus has a dozen.

While Elyria won the second match in straight sets, neither set was won by more than five points as they scored 25-21 and 25-20 wins.

Laney Reiff again led the offense with 16 of the teams 19 assists while Addison Swenson made nine kills. Swenson and Broadhus led the team in digs with each punching out 12 plus Macy Reiff had 10 and Julia Allen had nine.

Coach Gardner concluded her post-match reflections by adding, “Our girls are learning to play with their minds and not just their skill set. It was fun to watch them really connect on some things and push each other all the way to the end of the night.”

The Elyria Christian junior varsity spikers split two sets with Canton/Galva winning the first set 25-22 before losing set two 19-25. Leading the junior varsity matches were Amelia Moody with seven digs plus Liz Harvey and Kami Noggle each had three kills each.

Ranked earlier this week in 12th place of Class 1A Division I by MaxPreps, the Lady Eagles are now 13-4 on the season and facing a busy week coming up as they host a quad with Herington, Centre and second-ranked Little River on Tuesday, September 26 before closing out the week on Saturday, September 30 at the Burrton Invitational.
