EMPORIA – On Friday, the Elyria Christian volleyball team closed out their 2023 season at the Class 1A Division II State Tournament in Emporia during pool play where they finished 0-3.
With three losses the Lady Eagles finished the season with an overall mark of 20-18.
Entering the tournament as the seventh seed, the Lady Eagles played second seed Beloit St. John’s/Tipton Catholic in their first match of pool play where they lost in straight sets (14-25/16-25). In the match, Raegan Broadus made 16 digs to lead the Lady Eagles.
“I am so proud of these girls as we competed well in each game,” noted Elyria head coach Jaymie Gardner. “They stayed true to who they were and continued to fight for each point.”
The Lady Eagles scored their lone win of the tournament in the first set of their second match with third seed Argonia, winning 25-20 before losing the second and third sets (1825/18-25). Brooke Davidson recorded 11 kills and Laney Reiff passed out 18 assists while Addie Swenson, Jory Glendening, Laney Reiff and Julia Allen each punched out 16 digs as well.
In the final match of pool play, Elyria went up against sixth seed Sharon Springs/Wallace County and lost in straight sets (15-25/14-25) to close out their 2023 season.
Coach Gardner concluded her reflections on the tournament and season by saying, “With Macy Reiff going out with a head injury in the final set with Argonia, the girls had to go into the Wallace County match with a new rotation and without one of our seniors. They still worked hard and made Wallce County earn the win. This season is definitely one to remember for this team. They have so much to be proud of.”
