CANTON – Despite the snowing weather, the Elyria Christian girls still managed to travel the short distance of just over twenty miles to Canton to score a 14-point, 34-20, win over Canton/Galva on Friday.
“I was very proud of the effort our girls played tonight,” explained Elyria head coach Greg Fields. “Canton/Galva is a very well coached team with a lot of talent. It helped us to have some extra time to prepare for this game, and I could tell by the focus the girls had in practices that they were showing improvement from our games in December.”
The Lady Eagles held a four-point, 9-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter before pulling out to a 10-point, 19-9 lead as the two-team headed to the halftime break.
Still leading by ten at the end of the third quarter, Elyria added a few points to cushion the final 14-point victory.
While the Lady Eagles managed to connect on a hot 56% of their shots from the field, they held Canton/Galva to making just 25% of their shots, including a minimal 15% of the two-point shots they took. Both teams recorded twenty-seven turnovers though Elyria swiped nineteen steals lead by Grace Prescott and Addison Swenson with six each.
Prescott had the hot hand on offense as she scored just over half the Lady Eagle points, finishing with a game high eighteen while also leading the team in rebounds with five.
Coach Fields concluded his post-game reflections by adding, “Grace (Prescott), Addison (Swenson), and Julia (Allen) were incredibly active on defense as the three accounted for seventeen of the team’s nineteen steals. Grace finished a lot of fast break opportunities for us, and she was also picking up many lose balls off rebounds. Joy (Pyle) was a great presence for us inside and while she did not fill the stat sheet, she denied several interior shots from a team that is excellent at driving and scoring in the lane. It was really rewarding to watch these young girls continue to work hard and improve each day.”
Now 4-5 for the season, the Elyria girls will have the opportunity to even their season record on Tuesday when they return to the competitive court at home hosting Peabody/Burns. The Lady Warriors were still looking for their first win of the season heading into the holiday break.
