ELYRIA – While they did stumble a bit at the end, the Elyria Christian volleyball team had a solid season in 2023, finishing 23-18 and earning a trip to the Class 1A Division II state tournament.

“I was so proud of the girls this season,” noted Lady Eagle head coach Jayme Gardner. “From the beginning of the year, the girls really bought into the going all-out ‘Don’t die’ ‘Locked In’ mentality. They saw success in that early in the season, and that just stuck with them.”

The team was well balanced with three seniors (Julia Allen, Jory Glendening, and Macy Reiff) plus four juniors (Raegan Broadus, Brooke Davidson, Natalie Jader and Addison Swenson) along with sophomore Laney Reiff and two freshmen in Amelia Moody and Joy Pyle.

After winning the sub-state at Centre, the Lady Eagles traveled to Emporia for the Class 1A Division II state tournament where they lost three straight matches in pool play.

Coach Gardner talked about the season when she stated, “We had some really big wins against Goessel and Central Christian early on that really spurred our desire. Our Sub-State game against Central Christian was one of the most fun games I have ever coached. After we had lost to them earlier in the week, our girls were determined to win, so it was so fun to just watch them band together and play some fantastic volleyball.”

Elyria had seven Lady Eagles play in 95 sets for the season with Laney Reiff directing the offense most of the season and dishing out 541 assists. Laney also led the team in scoring service aces with 35.

Brooke Davidson led the Lady Eagles in both blocks with 73 and kills as she recorded 281 while seniors Julia Allen and Macy Reiff closed out their Elyria careers leading the team in digs with 483 and 429, respectively.

Concluding her post-season reflections, coach Gardner added, “Being at the state tournament was such a great experience. I believe that we showed ourselves that we really did belong there. The girls competed well and represented Elyria Christian well. Our fan base was awesome! The girls really felt loved and supported each step of the way.”
