ELYRIA – The youthful, short numbered Elyria Christian girls did it – they scored their first win of the season on Tuesday at home with a seven-point, 28-21 win over Sedgwick.

“It was nice to see the team earn their first win of the season,” noted Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields.  “I was very proud of our girls tonight for keeping their composure at the end of a close game. They did a great job of staying focused on their assignments and not turning the ball over in a pressure situation. It is outstanding anytime the team finished a game with more assists than turnovers.”

Sedgwick held a four-point, 10-14 lead over the Lady Eagles at the end of the first quarter and clung to a one-point, 17-18 advantage going into the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, both teams struggled to put points on the board in the third quarter and the lead still had Sedgwick ahead by one at 19-20 heading into the final quarter of play. It was the fourth quarter defense for Elyria that won the game as they held Sedgwick to just one point while the Lady Eagle offense put nine points on the board for the final seven-point victory.

Elyria only turned the ball over six times in the game while dishing out seven assists on offense and pulling down 19 defensive rebounds on defense.

Grace Prescott and Joy Pyle dominated the offense for the Lady Eagles as they each scored ten points with Pyle nearly claiming a double-double as she topped the team in rebounds with eight.

Coach Fields concluded his post-game reflections by stating, “Grace (Prescott) did a nice job running the offense and playing solid pressure defense the entire game. She hit a huge three-pointer with just over a minute to play, giving us our first lead before Addison (Swenson) sealed the game with two late free throws. Joy (Pyle) was dominant in the first quarter where she had eight of her ten points. She really kept us in the game when Sedgwick hit all four of their three pointers in that first quarter. It is so much fun to see a younger player visibly improve from one day to the next.”

Now 1-4 for the season, the Lady Eagles will travel to play Solomon before finishing their pre-Christmas schedule on the road at Hutchinson Central Christian on Mondy and home against Rural Vista on Tuesday.
