ELYRIA – In their first round of the Class 1A Division II sub-state, the Elyria Christian girls took care of business of a rebuilt Peabody/Burns team, winning 60-6.
“It’s a great feeling to move on in post-season play,” noted Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “I was happy with the intensity our girls played with tonight. It is easy to start to relax after you get a big lead, but every player remained focused through the duration of the game.”
With Peabody/Burns just in their third year of a return to competitive basketball, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 16-2 first quarter lead and held a 30-4 advantage at the halftime break.
Addison Swenson, Julia Allen, and Grace Prescott all shared the game high in scoring with 13 points each. Makenna Cass also reached double digits with 10.
Swenson also had the team high on defense with eight steals while tying with Prescott for the team high in assists with five. Julia Allen did the work in the paint by pulling down seven rebounds.
Speaking of his players, coach Fields added, “Addison (Swenson) really showed her leadership tonight as she distributed the ball extremely well, she scored, and she played sound defense. Grace (Prescott) was also very efficient on offense, and I was pleased with the low number of turnovers from the team as a whole. Our three seniors Julia (Allen), Makenna (Cass), and Hannah (Bower) all had a special night for their last home game.?
Now 14-7 for the season, the third seeded Lady Eagles have now been given the opportunity to travel to Lebo next Friday, March 1, to play in their sub-state semi-finals against a tough second-seed in Hutchinson Central Christian team that stands at 15-4 and had a first round bye. If they win, they will play the winner of top seed Lebo (18-1) and fourth seed Hartford (8-12) on Saturday.
