HERINGTON – The Elyria Christian girls went on the road Friday and took advantage of a poor shooting Herington team and flew to a 27-point, 47-20 win.
Leading 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles pushed the lead to 17 points, 19-2, heading to the halftime break. After the break they outscored the Lady Railroaders 29-18 to gain the final 27-point victory.
“We were happy to go on the road and get a quality league win,” pointed out Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “Both teams have been hurt by illness or injuries, so it looked a little rusty. I thought that Herington did a wonderful job of coming out of halftime with a lot of energy. That helped us focus a little more, and we started to see the ball go through the net.”
Addison Swenson led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 12 points, but Joy Pyle and Makenna Cass came close to double digits with nine and eight points, respectively. Cass had a huge night working the boards as she pulled down 12 rebounds while Pyle just missed a double-double by grabbing eight rebounds.
Coach Fields concluded his post-game reflections by noting, “Everyone did an impressive job of contributing to this win. I challenged the girls at the half to work a little harder on the boards. Makenna (Cass) took that to heart as she finished with a dozen rebounds. She and Joy (Pyle) both came close to having a double-double tonight. Julia (Allen) and Grace (Prescott) led the team in steals as they were extremely active on defense the entire game. Addison (Swenson) had a nice night on offense.”
Now sitting at 10-5 for the season and riding an eight-game winning streak, the Lady Eagles will be busy next week as they host Peabody/Burns in a weather delayed make-up game on Monday, travel to Goessel on Tuesday and then finish the week out next Friday hosting Class 1A Division I top ranked powerhouse Little River.
