ELYRIA – Being short in numbers, the Elyria Christian girls’ basketball team did their best in the 2024/25 season home opener on Friday before losing 28-73 to Class 2A Moundridge.

“We knew this would be a tough game to start our season,” noted Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “I was very happy with the effort our girls showed through all four quarters against a very talented and well-coach Moundridge team.”

Moundridge jumped out to a 44-15 halftime advantage before cruising in to beat the Lady Eagles by 45.

Grace Prescott led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 10 while Joy Pyle topped the team in rebounds with seven and Addie Swenson made four steals.

Speaking of his top players, coach Fields pointed out, “Grace (Prescott) did an excellent job running the offense and breaking their press. She picked up three fouls in the first half, so she had to rally back off on defense. Addie (Swenson) played all 32 minutes tonight at an extremely high level. She works so hard on both ends of the court, and her four steals and four assists are an example of the effort she gives.”

Coach Fields finished his reflections on the season opener by saying, “We will continue to work on getting back in position quickly to play solid defense. We gave up too many transition points and found ourselves out of position, which allowed a lot of open looks. There were a lot of good learning opportunities from which we can grow. I am looking forward to watching the girls continue to work hard and improve as the season goes on.”

The Lady Eagles will be back on the court on Monday, December 9 on the road at Linn before playing Hutchinson Central Christian on Tuesday, December 10 in the first round of the Goessel Bluebird Classic.
