ELBING – The Elyria Christian boys’ and girls’ basketball teams began playing in the Eli Walter Invitational hosted by Berean Academy on Tuesday and the Eagle boys won easily 65-32 over Hutchinson Central Christian while the Lady Eagles struggled in the second and third quarters and lost 51-31 to Wichita Classical.

Trailing by seven, 13-20, at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Eagles could not put any points in the basket in the second quarter, scoring just two, falling behind Wichita Classical 35-15 at the halftime break. Scoring just two points again in the third quarter, Elyria saw the deficit grow to 29, 17-46, by the end of the third quarter before the Lady Eagles found some offense and outscored Classical 14-5 in the fourth quarter.

“This was a tough way to start the Berean tournament,” noted Lady Eagle head coach Greg Fields. “We did not practice well on Monday as we had a lack of focus which translated to the way we played. Classical controlled the boards and had a lot of points off second or third shot attempts.”

Addison Swenson led the Lady Eagles with 12 points while grabbing six steals, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Grace Prescott just missed double digits with nine points and led the team in rebounds with four. As a team, the Lady Eagles were out rebounded 13-28.

Coach Fields concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “Addison (Swenson) worked hard to get the team to stay on track as she gave a lot of effort through all four quarters. Haven Bower played for several minutes in the second half and provided some really good energy.”

The Eagle boys routed Hutchinson Central Christian, winning by 33, 65-32. No other information was made available.
