ELYRIA CHRISTIAN BEGINS SEASON 1 OF 6-MAN FOOTBALL

History was made Friday night as Elyria Christian stepped onto the football field for its ‘first-ever game’, launching the Eagles' new six-man program.

      The Eagles battled a seasoned Peabody/Burns squad, filling the night with learning, growth, and first-game milestones despite a 7-54 loss.

      Peabody/Burns brought experience and success, having won three straight district championships and returning a strong senior group. That challenge gave Elyria Christian a clear picture of where improvement begins.

      The Eagle coaching staff shared afterward that this season will be a process, and Game one offered exactly what a young program needs – real game speed, live reps, and moments to adjust and settle in.

      “We saw some bright spots and did some really good things in the second quarter after settling in,” pointed out head coach Zach Goodrich. “By the fourth and fifth week, we expect to really start hitting our stride.”

      Despite not having full stats available, the coaches pointed out several defensive standouts for Elyria, as both Parker Hughes and Silas Menard had four tackles each, and pitching in with three tackles were Kaleb Cass and Gavyn Sechler.

      The history-making first touchdown in Eagle lore came from Kaleb Cass, who broke multiple tackles on a strong and determined run to put the Eagles on the scoreboard.

      Offensively, Elyria struggled, and Peabody/Burns defense was a big part of those struggles. The Eagles did have a drive that showed some potential, and they look forward to seeing that continue to develop and pay off as the season progresses.

      Coach Goodrich concluded his post-game reflections by saying, “Our young men continued to compete, and I believe they are eager to get back on the field. That excitement and competitiveness are important as we move forward. We have a lot to learn, a lot to improve, and a great opportunity in front of us.”

With the foundation being laid, the growth has started, and now the Eagles turn their attention to a road trip at Chetopa, which opened its season with a 58-12 win over Altoona/Midway. Elyria Christian is eager to get back on the field, continue learning the six-man game, and build confidence as the season moves forward.
