EAGLES STUMBLE TO OPEN 2024 SEASON

SEDGWICK – For the Canton/Galva baseball team, the opening day of the 2024 season was a rough ride as they went on the road Thursday and lost twice to Sedgwick, 1-12, and 0-15.

Falling behind 0-10 by the end of the first two innings in game one, the Eagles finally scored their first run of the new season when Dylan Cherry crossed the plate in the top of the third inning.

Canton/Galva only managed one hit to go with the run as the Sedgwick pitching shut down the Eagle bats while walking just one and striking out a dozen.

Ross Burrill and Gavin Roberston worked the mound for the Eagles where they threw 175 pitches in just four innings while giving up five hits, walking nine and striking out four.

Game two did not get much better for the Eagles as Sedgwick took a 0-1 lead at the bottom of the first and then pushed 12 runs across in the second on their way to a 0-15 no-hit, victory.

Andrew Huxman, Dylan Cherry, and Shepp Kidd combined to throw 191 pitches and strike out six in the loss.

The Eagles were scheduled to play a makeup double header on Monday when they host Bennington before going on the road to Wichita Homeschool on Tuesday.

Canton/Galva head coach Seth Moddelmog was quick and on the point in his post-game reflections when he stated, “To be blunt, we struggled in all aspects of the game. We came out flat and were not ready to play and that is on me as the head coach. Sedgwick is a good team, so credit them for providing some of the struggles we had, but there were just too many mistakes overall. We need to get over these two losses and get back to work.”
