GREAT BEND – Making up a bit for the Friday night loss, the McPherson High freshman and junior varsity football teams both claimed wins over Great Bend in their home field 2023 season debuts on Monday.
In the junior varsity game, the Bullpups scored in the second quarter on a two-yard run by Keaton Crane, giving them a 6-0 advantage at the halftime break.
Carter Bengston plunged in from one yard out in the fourth quarter, giving the Bullpups their second score of the game and the final 12-0 shutout victory.
No other stats or coach reflections were available.
For the freshman, they put four scores on the board in gaining a 26-8 win for the Bullpups faithful.
“The freshman started their season with a win today over Great Bend,” noted Bullpup freshman coach David Goerzen. “Other than a few mistakes, the freshman played well for their first game.”
Carter Bengston had a solid day at quarterback for the freshman Pups as he threw a pair of touchdowns in the game, the first covering 15 yards to Izyck Puhalla and the second on a short seven-yarder to Matthew Burger.
Duane Becker found the end zone on a six-yard dash while Lavell Brownfield closed out the Bullpup scoring in spectacular fashion when hit took a handoff at the McPherson one and rambled 99 yards for a score.
Combined with one Brownfield two-point conversion run, McPherson got their 26-8 win.
No other stats were available on the game.
Both teams will combine for a single game next Monday, September 11, when they play host to Augusta.
