CANTON – It was a good night for the home crowd in Canton as the Canton/Galva football team raced past Norwich 68-14 on Friday evening.


With the win the Eagles are now 3-1 on the season and looking at a road trip to Fairfield on Friday, September 29. Fairfield has not won a game yet in the 2023 season and lost 52-6 on Friday to Central Christian.


The Eagles scored three times in the first quarter with Lane McMannis running for a pair of scores from twenty-one and three yards out before Leyton Witte rambled to the end zone from 68 yards to give Canton/Galva a commanding 24-0 first quarter advantage after making all three two-point conversions.


While Norwich did score twice in the second quarter, the Eagles put up 44 points on the board to score a single half, 68-14 win.


In the second quarter, Leyton Witte scored on runs of nine, seventy-four, and forty-six yards out and Lane McMannis scored twice from 37 yards out on a run and finished the scoring by taking a pass interception to the end zone. Kustom Schamp took a pass from Jaden Ediger and hustled 21 yards to paydirt as well.


Norwich had the ball offensively three times longer than Canton/Galva but only had 204 yards in offense on 44 snaps of the ball while the Eagles ran up 403 yards of offense on just 26 snaps, including 260 yards on the ground.


The Eagle defense, led by Lane McMannis with 8.5 tackles and Leyton Witte with 6.5, held Norwich to just 65 yards on 19 carries.


Offensively, Jaden Ediger quarterbacked the Canton/Galva offense and threw for 143 yards after completing seven-of-twelve passes. Leyton Witte rambled for 175 yards on just six totes of the ball and Lane McMannis ran for another 76 on seven carries. When you add in 76 yards in pass receptions, Witte accounted for 251 yards on nine touches.
